Are you a Lightworker?

“Sometimes the universe turns off all the lights so we have no choice but to find our own.”
Rebecca Campbell – Light is the new black
Part 3
How have I got here?
I’ve sat here for what feels like ages staring at the screen wondering how to start this post. I’m not usually stuck for words. Perhaps this isn’t so much about being stuck but where to start. Not wanting this to read like a jumble of thoughts thrown onto a page. A short introduction on how I’ve ended up here may be useful for me and you the reader. How have I reached this point on my journey? Not least as looking backwards helps me see how and why I’m considering this subject matter. It will also be clearer as to why or how Lightworker may fit into our current topics. Plus why I may seem not to have any fixed spiritual practice as many do.
To some reading this blog the implication may be I’ve been on this path a long time…I have not. Granted this Pagan path began back in my twenties but I only really started this journey seriously in 2020. On February 2nd to be exact. That day I made the decision, that for better or worse I would not hide or ignore my inner callings any more. I had the feeling of being incomplete but I also had a lot of fears surrounding this decision. Some remain, some do not.
A lot has happened in these few short years. Many ups, downs, twists and turns. To keep relevant to this subject though we move forward to 2021. Coming out of a period of turmoil in May I began to feel scattered, lacking direction, frustraited. My card readings spoke of going back to basics, turning my gaze inwards to self reflection. I decided to ask a fellow practioner for a card reading for any further insight. So I turned to the lovely Callee whom you’ve all read about. I feel others can sometimes pick up on things we might miss.
This reading was very thorough and interesting. I did not tell her in any specific detail what I wanted to know just that it was about my spiritual path. It confirmed the period of turmoil, new beginings, making decisions, forgiving self, closing doors, making space for moving forward, all sorts of things. Looking back on this reading today I can see some of it still playing out. The Universe doesn’t recognise our perception of linear time. The lessons take as long as they take. Importantly though it specified that keeping my compass pointed to my true North, values and intuition would always lead me to where I needed to be. My path is mine, I am the leader of it, the authority. I don’t need permission or justification to follow it. None of us do.
This past year and a half or so I have heeded those words going where I’ve been led. I’ve gone back to basics, looked at many and varied subject areas and not fixated on any one tradition per se. Having said that I have something of a framework I stick to which I’ve found still resonates so far. Some of these new theory’s I’ve examined bring a sense of knowing which can’t be easily put into words. With all I’ve tried to boot my ego out the way and not be jugemental, trusting the process. This has led me here to these current posts and today the expression “Lightworker”.

“Spiritual warriors are truth speakers and light keepers, not fearmongers or cheerleaders.”

Introduction
The term Lightworker is a relatively modern word, it arose sometime in the 80’s within the “New Age” community. Arguably the word “Witch” is modern too. History tells us that no-one would have considered calling themselves this, to do so would have bought severe repercussions possibly death. I included a link here to a very interesting article by Mat Auryn. This article writes about the concepts behind these words and the choice to use them. It’s pertinent to what I mentioned in my notification about not liking certain words and the hang ups they give us. Something I’m trying to avoid.
The reason for continuing onto this topic is because it seems that a lot of empaths and highly sensitive folks also fall under this title of Lightworker. The traits are the same. I was also watching a video one evening which was discussing the quantum realm and energy. Though it didn’t mention the word anywhere it triggered it in my mind. I then ended up looking more in depth and a whole other world opened up. So, if you’re of this nature, you too may discover something new about yourself.
Awakening
The world is awash with definitions of a what a Lightworker is. From all I’ve read and watched I would say in it’s simplest form it’s a soul incarnated to help the planet or humanity in some way. Conciously working to raise the energetic vibration of themselves and everything around them. It’s by no means an easy task nor does it mean they haven’t and don’t suffer trauma. They continually work to face their inner depths to transform their shadows into gifts. This seems to me this is where the term shadow work comes from.
I believe to be on any spiritual path means at some point a person must have had some sort of trigger which made them believe there must be more to life than their current experience. Whether it’s not fitting into an existing religious practice, a life event or the feeling of a call to “something”. Some may call this a spiritual awakening but whatever you call it, it usually sets of a chain of events which spark deep introspection and the asking of some rather big questions. It’s no different for a Lightworker. Those who feel it’s always been with them, that it’s innate, usually have substantial fear stepping into their path and build protective walls around themselves. They feel like time is running out, that they’re here for a reason. They are spiritual but not religious, there is a difference.
How familiar that all feels to me.
Lightworker differences
Just as there are for empaths there are different kinds of Lightworker. Here are a few of them:
- Healers
- Lightkeepers
- Gatekeeper or Gridworker
- Transmuters
- Wayshowers
- Messengers
- Seers
Below you’ll find a link to one of the best videos I’ve found explaining all about what a Lightworker is. There’s so much more to it and she gives other links to videos she’s done which are informative too. In fact the whole channel is packed full with useful stuff and is one of the most sincere I’ve found. If for nothing else I encourage you to watch it and learn something new.

“Light precedes every transition. Whether at the end of a tunnel, through a crack in the door or the flash of an idea, it is always there, heralding a new beginning.”
― Teresa Tsalaky, The Transition Witness
Like all subjects, what I’ve written here barely scratches the surface even though I’ve been writing this all day. I seem to have found this more difficult than others. Perhaps because it’s completely new territory. Having said that it still feels somehow familiar. For now though I’ll leave it here and I’m sure we’ll return to this topic as this ever unfolding journey continues.
Do you consider yourself a Lightworker? What are your thoughts on this subject?

This series on light workers has been so interesting to me! I’ve never used that term to describe myself, but much of what you said resonated with me. As you mentioned, terms like “light worker” and “witch” would not have been used by our ancestors… and it took me years to embrace the term witch for myself. But I often also say that I practice the Old Ways, because I believe these ways of thinking and these practices (including light work as you’ve described it) predate the religions and traditions that have dominated the past two thousand years. One other thing: I’ve learned that light is only fully able to shine and be seen in the midst of darkness.♥️
I wonder sometimes why it is we need to describe ourselves.
Perhaps it’s because whenever we meet anyone, particularly someone we’ve never met before they ask us what we do as if the answer defines us. It’s somehow all encompassing, a measure of who we are. I’ve often found that whatever I say is unsually not interesting enough for further conversation. Which is a great pity because we all have a story. The most powerful statement we can make is “I am” what we end it with is so important. Not only does it either diminish or uplift us but it also sends this message to the universe to. Like attracts like, sometimes it’s enough to just say I AM without any attachments.
I do resonate more with the term “The Old Ways” and I think this is in line with “Old Soul” which I also prefer. As you mention it does feel it predates the modern religions. I also prefer “The Crooked Path” as from my own experiences my journey is far from linear, it’s like a river. Sometimes it meanders along round this bend or that, then it becomes a torrent, emotionally bursting over, falling to the depths to rest in a calmer space. Only to continue on as the journey unfolds to the wider depths of the ocean and understanding. 🥰
